“Instructions and Guidelines for the Closure and Rehabilitation of Landfills, May 2007, Ministry of Environmental Protection.” The document includes background information about the hydrogeology of the site’s environment, the landfill’s activity in the past, and its current environmental and physical condition, such as: gas emissions, leachate analyses, soil subsidence, slope stability, potential for internal combustion, and more. The findings of the work show that currently (February 2022) there are no internal comments throughout the site. This hypothesis is based on field tours and thermal scans, and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations, which do not show abnormal concentrations. At the same time, soil subsidence was observed around the site and is most likely a result of the drainage of the surface runoff leading to the erosion of the soil cover, and not of the collapse of the waste body. It is assumed that the restoration of the site and the regulation of the drainage will prevent these cases in the future. On the site there is a high variability in terms of biogenic gases, apparently methane is not formed in a constant amount and quantity from which stable energy can be produced. The hydrogen-sulfide concentrations are high and well felt in the landfill environment, requiring an adequate solution. It is quite possible that the detailed planning for the restoration will include a biogas collection and disposal system – but with the aim of reducing the spread of odor to the waste site surroundings. The document is the product of many months of work and is the result of a dialogue held with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and other factors. As of these days (February 2022), engineering planning for the restoration of the site is underway. After the approval of the investigation of the site – the plan for rehabilitation will be presented to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
